Ermanno Orlando si è laureato in Storia presso l’Università di Venezia e ha conseguito il Dottorato di ricerca in Scienze Storiche e Antropologiche presso l’Università di Verona. È stato borsista per diversi anni presso l’Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere e Arti ed assegnista di ricerca presso le università di Venezia e di Verona. Dal 2016 svolge attività didattica presso l’Università per stranieri di Siena, dove è attualmente professore associato di Storia medievale. Si occupa di storia di Venezia nel basso medioevo, di storia politica e culturale del mondo mediterraneo e di storia del commercio e della mobilità umana.

Ermanno Orlando is Associate Professor of Medieval History at the University for Foreigners of Siena. He received his undergraduate Degree in History at the University of Venice and his Ph.D. in Historical and Anthropological Sciences at the University of Verona. He had scholarships from the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti of Venice. He was a research fellow at the Universities of Venice and Verona. His research focuses on the history of Venice in the Late Middle Ages, the social and cultural history of the Mediterranean World and the history of mobility and trade.
Linee di ricerca
Le sue ricerche e pubblicazioni vertono sulla storia di Venezia nel basso medioevo, sulla storia sociale e culturale del mondo mediterraneo e sulla storia del commercio e della mobilità umana. Nello specifico, i suoi interessi ruotano attorno a tre tematiche principali: le relazioni politiche e giurisdizionali tra Venezia e i suoi domini, in particolare l’area adriatica e le coste balcaniche; la storia del matrimonio e della famiglia, in riferimento a Venezia e al Veneto; i movimenti migratori verso Venezia, con attenzione in particolare rivolta alle dinamiche di integrazione e inclusione delle minoranze nella società ospite. Attualmente sta lavorando su un progetto di ricerca relativo alle migrazioni nel medioevo e a un volume di sintesi sulla storia delle Repubbliche marinare.
His research and published works focus on the history of Venice in the Late Middle Ages, the social and cultural history of the Mediterranean World and the history of mobility and trade. In particular, his main fields of research are: the institutional and jurisdictional relationships between Venice and its maritime state, with a focus on the Adriatic area and the Western Balkans; the history of marriage and family, with reference to the Veneto and the Venetian area; the migration movements towards Venice, with a particular attention to the processes of integration, inclusion and/or exclusion of migrants into the host society. Currently he is working on a research project on the migrations in the Middle Ages and on a booklet on the Maritime Republics.
