Course Title:
Course content:
Considered that important television networks have chosen the Arab-Syrian dialect as the official dialect for movies and tv series dubbing, it has become essential to provide students with the basic knowledge of this dialect. The course will focus on the basic phonetic, morphological and syntactical structures of Colloquial Levantine Arabic, through grammar, conversation reading and translation exercises.

Teaching Methods:
Lectures on morphosyntax combined with a communicative-situational approach. Use of video and audio equipment for listening to dialogues and watching films and television programmes in the Levantine dialect.
Learning Objectives:
(Knowledge and understanding): acquisition of the basic phonetic, morphological and syntactical structures of Colloquial Levantine Arabic; acquisition of the most commonly used verbs, phrases and vocabulary. (Applying knowledge and understanding) reproduction of Levantine Arabic’s sounds; production and comprehension of simple written and oral texts. (Making judgements): choosing the appropriate variety according to the communicative situation. (Communication skills) having simple conversations about everyday life topics (level B1 of CEFR). (Learning skills) comprehension of the diglossic situation of the Arab world; acquisition of a methodology that allows students continuing the study of the Levantine Arabic.
